Personal Experience with Resveratrol

My name is Megan Odegen. I’m a graduate student at the University of Tennessee and I want to share my experience with Vital Rez V, one of the brand names for Resveratrol. I first learned about Resveratrol after watching an episode of 20/20 with Barbara Walters and my interest peaked when Mike Wallace did a story on the supplement as well. Both interviewed Dr. David Sinclair, the guy who actually discovered the benefits of Resveratrol. I’ve posted the videos below if you’re interested in seeing for yourself, but basically Dr. Sinclair was studying a gene believed to be responsible for the aging process. He and many others believe that if the gene is “turned on” then aging stops, or is at least slowed down significantly. After testing 20,000 molecules against the gene, he discovered that Resveratol could actually turn the gene on in yeast. That’s significant because humans have this gene as well.
According to Dr. Sinclair, a few of the benefits of resveratol include:
· Decreased risk for heart disease (including heart attack and stroke)
· Proven extension in various (non-human) species, including:
o Saccharomyces cerevisiae
o Caenorhabditis elegans
o Drosophila melanogaster
· Increased energy (including humans in initial studies)
· Lowered cholesterol
· Decreased outward signs of aging, including
o Decreased facial wrinkles
o Tire less quickly
· Decreased risk of cancer (proven in mice and rats)
· Weight reduction of obese animals (human trials underway)
· Improved skeletal resilience (decreased instances of Osteoporosis)
· Reduces negative effects of poor diet
And admittedly, that’s just a portion of what appears to be a growing list of benefits. So, while certain aspects of the compounds are still being tested, I thought it would be fun to try Resveratrol for a month and see if I notice a change in my personal wellness. I found several companies on the internet that were giving away free trials of Resveratrol, and I ordered a sample bottle from each. This was how I was able to take the recommended dose without spending much money, the total I spent was less than $20.
So did I notice improvement in how I looked and felt? After a few weeks of taking Resveratrol I did notice that I felt more rested when waking up in the morning as well as less worn out at the end of the day. There is no way to be 100 percent certain this is because of the supplement, but it has continued for the past few weeks, and it has certainly made my days feel a bit more pleasant. The other thing I’ve noticed is that food seems to be more fulfilling. My diet hasn’t changed, but the BLAAH feeling I sometimes get after eating isn’t there. And while I honestly haven’t noticed a change in my appearance, I have had several people comment that I am “glowing,” which I honestly just attribute to my restful nights. Also, according to my roommate Lacey, my skin is clearer and more vibrant.
I intend to continue taking Resveratrol for the next few months, and suspect I will continue to be pleasantly surprised. Most of the research taking place won’t be able to truly prove or disprove the benefits of Resveratrol in humans for many years to come. But personally, I think both initial lab test with animals as well as my own experience is enough to say, “Why wait?” Resrveratrol appears to be the discovery that will revolutionize the process of aging.
